March is Irish American Heritage Month

February 25, 2026

Every March, communities across the United States celebrate Irish American Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of Irish immigrants and their descendants.

Irish immigration to the United States began in the 1700s but increased dramatically during the mid-1800s, especially during the Great Famine. Families arrived seeking opportunity, bringing with them traditions rooted in faith, resilience, music, storytelling, and a strong sense of community. Over generations, Irish Americans have helped shape the nation in countless ways—from public service and labor movements to literature, arts, education, and leadership.

Presidents such as John F. Kennedy proudly celebrated their Irish roots, while cultural icons like Bono of U2 continue to share Irish influence with the world through music and advocacy.

Irish American Heritage Month also coincides with Saint Patrick's Day on March 17, a day filled with parades, traditional Irish foods, music, and plenty of green attire. While many celebrate with festive fun, the month offers a deeper opportunity to reflect on the perseverance and impact of Irish Americans throughout U.S. history.
